Variant Covers... Empty Variant Covers...

I'm just curious as to everyone's opinion on variant covers.

I mean, it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't charge extra money...but a couple shops by me charge upwards of $15 a book.

Does anyone actually pay that much?

It depends. For AMS #700 i was ok with paying a few dollars more. Same with some of the Avengers Vs X-Men variants. I find the trick is pre ordering them so they are much cheaper.

Yea that's the thing. My LCS won't pre-order Variant covers without some kind of extra fee because Marvel only sends out variants when you've ordered a certain number of titles. Like, a retailer can't just ask for a variant cover.

Since we're on the topic, why did you buy the variant for ASM 700? Did the art attract you or was it an investment purchase?

It was for the cover itself i just thought it was cool. Maybe it might be worth something one day.

Wow, it is def a beautiful cover though, certainly a good homage.

I was looking to get the Skottie Young cover for Age of Ultron. I don't know. There's just something so cool about it to me haha.

Anyone else have any opinions on variants?

If I get a variant slipped in from my comic shop I'll take it, but I never go out of my to get one. Honestly, I don't see many of today's comics being worth much in the future....maybe sketch variant covers.

That's an interesting point Justin. I don't understand the appeal of sketch variants, i mean, it's 1/3 the workload, it's not the actual sketch, but a reprint and they start at $50.

I like the Scottie Young variants, and have some myself, my other fascination is the Deadpool variants with the NOW! releases.

I totally hear you on that, Justin. Unless it was something as monumental as ASM 700 or something like that, I don't think there'll ever be another comic to financially rival that of Action Comics #1. These days, the speculator's market operates blindly.

That being said, I really only consider purchasing a variant if it appeals to me aesthetically. That's so cool that your shop will just randomly slip them into your pile, though. Is that, like, a normal thing? My LCS don't do that 0_o

The guy at my comic shop for some reason has variant covers left over and he slips them to his regulars as a surprise. I think he only does it for the variants that are inexpensive.
